Evidence-free extensions

If you need to extend a deadline for a coursework assignment by one week, you can do so in ELE. This is called a self-certified extension (self-cert).

View our video guide (YouTube) on how to extend the deadline for an assignment.

Self-cert/Evidence-free extensions:

  • allow for an extra week (7 days) to complete an assignment
  • have no requirement to provide evidence or documents
  • can be used up to four times during the academic year (once per assessment)
  • can be added before, or up to 24 hours after a submission deadline
  • can’t be used for exams or short duration coursework/timed assessments

Evidence-based Mitigation

You need to apply for evidence-based mitigation if you:

  • have used all your self-cert extensions and need a one-week extension
  • need a 2-week extension
  • need to defer an assessment to the next assessment period

The process to apply for mitigation depends on your programme.

International Study Centre students and Credit rated Insessional students must complete the Mitigation application form and send it to isc.academicsupport@exeter.ac.uk.

Students on a CEDAR PGT Clinical Training programme must follow the information about mitigation listed in the CEDAR PGT Handbook.

For all other students, you can apply for mitigation directly through the Student Record System (SRS).

You can apply for Mitigation:

  • up to four weeks before, or
  • up to 24 hours after your assessment deadline.

Applications more than 4 weeks before your assessment deadline will not be accepted. Late applications will only be considered in exceptional circumstances and require additional evidence to support why the application could not be made on time.

You can apply for 1-week extensions, 2-week extensions, or a deferral to the next assessment period. You will need to provide evidence to support your application.

View our video guide (YouTube) on how to apply for evidence-based mitigation.
