What you need to know
Information about the module you want to drop
The name, code and credit value of the module.
You can find this information under ‘Student Record Module’ in the Student Record System (SRS)
If you don’t currently have enough credits, you won’t need to drop a module.
Information about the module you want to take
The name, code and credit value of the module, and the discipline it belongs to.
Module codes start with letters denoting the discipline, for example ‘PSY’ for Psychology. This is followed by either a number or letter denoting the year of study, for example ‘1’ indicates Undergraduate Stage 1, and ‘M’ indicates Postgraduate Masters. Then the last 3 digits are an identifier for the module.
It is important to understand you can usually only take modules at or below the Stage you are studying. Undergraduates can only take up to 30 credits of the year below. Exceptions to this will be listed on the module descriptors or programme specifications.
You can find this information in the module descriptor within the Study Information section.
The module description will also show you:
- if the module has any rules, such as
- Pre-requisites: modules that must be taken before the module you want
- Co-requisites: modules that must be taken together
- Non-requisites: modules that can't be taken together because their content is too similar
- what the module covers
- how you will be assessed
Extra considerations
If the module you want to take is already full
You will get placed on a waiting list until a space becomes available.
While awaiting a change or on a waiting list
You need to continue attending your existing classes until you get accepted onto a new module.
How changing modules could impact your timetable
To check if changing modules will create a timetable clash, you can view the schedule of another module using MyTimetable.
Read the guide on how to view the timetable for a module you're not enrolled in.
- If you will have 1 to 3 clashes each term, then you could use Recap to catch-up on any missed content, but you will get marked as non-attendance.
- If you will have 4 or more clashes, your department will recommend an appropriate action. This could include changing modules or tutor groups.
If you choose to take a module with a timetable clash, you do so at your own risk. Your non-attendance/missed content will not constitute grounds for appeal or mitigation.
How your module credits are spread across the year
It is important that you think about the workload you will have in each term.
It is possible to have uneven credits in each term. However, we advise you aim for an even workload each term to help you perform at your best.
Submit your module change request online
You can complete the module change request form online with all your prepared information.
After you submit the form, you will receive further guidance by email within 5 working days.
